The Most Evil Device Ever?

Have you commited a crime lately? Are you on the run from the law? Be glad you don't have this micro-chip implanted. A Saudi Arabian scientist has filed for a patent for a "killer" tracking device, which would be used to trace fugitives from justice, terrorists, illegal immigrants, criminals, political opponents and more. The chip acts like a DPS tracker, but with the added bonus of being able to inject a deadly poison into anyone that becomes a security risk. The Story.

Medical Porn

Artist Gunther von Hagens is brewing another controversy. The medic from Germany has stirred the waters of the Art world by bringing us exhibits involving dead bodies injected with plastic and posed in life-like situations. And he really caused an uproar when he conducted an autopsy live on TV. Now von Hagens is planning to display his plasticized corpses depicting the stages of life, from conception through death. His latest project is called "Cycles of Life" and already has critics because two of the corpses are locked in a sexual pose. The story includes pictures that may not be safe for viewing while you are eating. You can also see Von Hagens entire concept on his website, Bodyworlds.

Pierced Glasses

If I were to ever get a piercing I would definitely consider getting this done. A piercing that actually has a function. Apparently, each lens is attached to a piercing in the bridge on the nose by magnets and I hope those magnets are strong enough, so you don't accidentally knock them off all the time.

Life Imitates Art

Here are two commercials to watch. I believe that you will see a startling similarity emerge that will shake you to the core (or maybe just halfway to the core).



So far, so good. It's your basic ad for cosmetics, showing a heavily airbrushed woman who looks somewhat like an android (gynoid?), poncing around in an empty, black, out-of-focus room, interspersed with product shots against a stark white background. (I'm always a little saddened when the real product doesn't create lines of light in contour around my wife's face.) I don't know to much about the product's specific properties.

What I know for sure is that it bares a startling similarity to a fictional product I have seen before.

The Scale of Loss

Apparently New York workers enjoy a fixed compensation scale for the loss of body parts. Each body part is judged to be worth a certain number of weeks of wages. Here's the scale:

• One eye: 160 weeks
• One ear: 60 weeks
• Both ears: 150 weeks
• One arm: 312 weeks
• One leg: 288 weeks
• One foot: 205 weeks
• Big toe: 38 weeks
• One hand: 244 weeks
• pinky: 15 weeks
• little toe: 16 weeks

So why is the little toe worth more than the pinky? The New York Times has the full illustrated list.

The Dionne Quintuplets

Everyone knows we're in the midst of a new Great Depression. But isn't it a little spooky that so many things from the 1930's are repeating themselves? Such as: a nation, mired in bad economic times, is distracted by a case of multiple births.

Today, we have the "Octo-mom."




But some seventy years ago, it was the Dionne Quintuplets.




Somehow I doubt we as a nation will be still following these 2009 kids six years from their birth.




Nor will there be a mass rush to merchandise the unnatural octuplets.




And of course, the ever-prophetic The Simpsons nailed it all ten years ago, with the episode entitled EIGHT MISBEHAVIN'.
