The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Deaths

image

Once upon a time, there was a kindly old lady who specialized in creating gruesome murder dioramas. Her name was Frances Glessner Lee, and her little scenes went on to educate criminologists for decades.

Follow the link for a whole book about her.

The Mascot

I will never again say that Toy Story was utterly original.

More on the animator.

Jesus laments that a container ship from Taiwan lost a bunch of toys overboard.

More great religious inspiration here.

Erectorscope

image

What is the mystery of the "Erectorscope?" Does it have anything to do with erections? No!

This product comes from the Gilbert folks who made Erector construction toys.

If you look here, you'll see an accompanying booklet printed in the old-fashioned 2-color 3-D system. It seems the Erectorscope was nothing more than the cardboard blue/red glasses to view the advertised Gilbert products.

No wonder the kid in the ad is turned away from the customer. It's as bad a scam as X-ray Spex.

Even the toys of the 1970s were drug-saturated.

Thingmaker

I had this toy as a kid. Great fun. The plastic always looked edible and it was hard to resist chewing on the bugs.

What are the chances you could sell such a molten-plastic, electric-powered, producer-of-things-dangerous-to-swallow toy today?
