Follies of the Mad Men #41
[From Playboy magazine for June 1974.]"Let's take a screeching unfunny harridan, dress her in Colonial drag, then simulate a hideous war wound using our product as a makeshift sling. Then, let's run the ad in a magazine filled with beautiful naked women for contrast."

It appears that there is a misunderstanding about the ad. There is no simulated hideous war wound - she is simply resting her arm on her knee to showcase her fine assortment of belts. What is puzzling is how an (apocryphal?) story of women seducing British officers to allow the colonial army to escape has anything at all to do with the manufacture or sale of men's belts.

Vern--while it's true that there is no blood or bandage on Diller's arm, I think the intent is plainly to mimic the famous painting of the wounded Revolutionary soldiers with flag and fife. But in any case, the pose is quintessentially stupid.

Paul - That makes sense since they are called Fife and Drum Belts.
BTW - Phyllis Diller has not aged at all. She is still as butt-f$%king ugly as she's ever been.

Since her first facelift! Do you remember her before that? She was like...well, never mind; the risk of flashbacks is just too great, and trust me, you *DON'T* want to know....

I'm just not moved to own one of these belts.
I remember Phyllis from when I was growing up. Funny lady!

Expat - Yeah, she was funny but I wouldn't want to come across her picture while thumbing through a Playboy.

Wow, I wish that free "Mary Murray Detainer Kit" was still available. Just imagining the possibilities...
PS. I've seen a pic of Diller with no make-up.... shudder-ific.

The belts aren't a sling, because none of them are fastened. She's just showing them by draping them over her arm. I really don't get at all what the Rev. War getup and the Mary Murray story are supposed to have to do with men's belts, or how Phyllis Diller is related to any of the above.

Maybe, Big Gary, the Phyllis Diller connection is that she was alive during the Rev. War.

"unfunny harridan"? She's a comic legend. Harridan, maybe, but she is funny.

I just checked Dead or Alive? http://www.deadoraliveinfo.com/dead.nsf to find out when she passed on (morbid curiosity), but she's still kicking! At age 91, it just shows she's as scrappy as she was funny!

Madd Maxx - "t'humbing' through a Playboy?" Is that all you need to do?
Posted by lostinthevalleygirl on 10/29 at 05:15 PM
lostinthevalleygirl - 'Thumbing through a Playboy' was just a comment on the most common use for Playboy and how scary it would be to turn the page and see Phyllis Diller, in mid stroke mind you.
I, personally never cared for Playboy...too pre-school. My old favs were Penthouse and Hustler. Of course, since getting online sometime around '95 I haven't had a need to pay for and store magazines.

Agreed Maxx, if you can whack it to playboy, you have serious issues.

Unfunny? It's not like she's Dane Cook. Phyllis Diller is a comic legend, and she's hilarious.

Comic genius, really? I don't know if I'd go that far. I think Jack Benny was a comic genius.

Kingmonkey, most of these pups weren't whelped yet when Phyllis Diller was the only white female standup star. Joan Rivers and others followed.

Ignore this. I'm just doing a test.

Whatcha testin'? Strikethrough?
How did you do that? Also, how can you bold type? Just thought I'd ask.
