Lowrider Oldies

How Anglo-Saxon oldies became associated with the mainly Latino lowrider subculture, I have no idea.....

WTF?!? The mix of songs is completely random- there are simply no words to describe just how unbelievably bizarre this is. Perhaps they figure they can sucker some wanna-be gangstas into believing that this is appropriate low-rider music? Perhaps this isn't a commercial at all but a cryptic communication between between black-ops commandos?

I used to work in a music store and we carried these CD's for cars with stupidly huge sound systems with titles like "Boomin' Bass" and "Thumpin' Bass" and they were just that- an entire CD's worth of obnoxiously loud bass. These CD's all had two things in common, 1) they were universally terrible, and 2) the covers all featured photographs of women, but you could never see their faces as they were usually shot from behind while bending over a car (while wearing a thong and really short skirt, of course). There was only one cover that veered from this formula and it featured a photo of a woman in a bikini - but only from the neck down...doing what appeared to be the crump. Subtle.

WTF is right!
99% of those songs have no bearing on Lowriders at all. They are the worn out 50's songs they play at white guy car shows. I have been to lowrider shows and this is NOT what they play!!
And the Lowrider Girl song.....another WTF moment.

Actually, I grew up in Texas around lowrider car shows, and I remember hearing this music being played, like stuff by Johnny Chingas. Se Mi Paro, which I have never friggin forgotten the damn song because it was so dirty, lol.
This music was very popular because of the era. It's still listened to at a lot of car shows I've been to.
You gotta remember, with the golden oldies music, a lot of it (the beat, sound, etc.) was mirrored around the world in different languages and cultures. Makes sense that the growing chicano culture embraced it, as well.
Remember Cannibal and the Headhunters? Land of 1000 Dances? They were mexican-american, and their music was a part of lowrider culture, too. Freddy Fender? Sang Wasted Days and Wasted Nights. He went on to be in the Texas Tornadoes. Can't forget Ritchie Valens.
People like these were direct influences on chicano culture, and that's how we ended up with Los Lonely Boys (How Far is Heaven) that came out a few years ago. And they are all a part of lowrider culture, too. Lowrider culture started in chicano communities, and back then, what we consider 'oldies' are what they were listening to.

It's cruising music. Old cars and old music. This is the stuff we listened to driving "slow and low" down Whittier Blvd back in the day.

Hmmm. That's not what the low-riders that cruise the freeways around Fort Worth are playing - what they play isn't in English. And what's with the voice-over saying "$89.99" while the visual says "$89.00" - so who gets the extra 99 cents?

avmayes, of course, when has it ever been different? new technology, new ways for somebody to make a quick buck.

When did the Marvelettes, Main Ingredient, Carl Carlton, The Four Tops, Barbara Mason, James Brown etc., become Anglo Saxons?

Not to mention that most of today's car chases aren't even believable since mere flat tires can make cars rollover in the air with the use of distributor.
