Transcendent Man

The Singularity: an indeterminate post-human future. Hooey, or prophecy? Perhaps the new movie Transcendent Man debuting at the upcoming Tribeca Film Festival, will explain it all for us.

Not so much "the singularity is near" as "the end is nigh", Kurzweil's suggestion that we will someday merge our intelligence with that of machines opens the door to the kind of dystopia that is the fare of many a sci-fi novel.

Even the briefest glance at today's computer networks, with their spam, phishing, botnets, viruses, etc. should tip the average person off to exactly how bad an idea it would be to slave or outsource functions of our brains to electronic augments. Yet Kurzweil argues that those people who don't upgrade (or Luddites as he calls them) will probably end up on "Nature Reserves" set aside by the world-dominating human-machine combine as it converts first the Earth, then the other planets, into pure computer power.

And all this is to happen within a century. Perhaps we should all be stocking up on ray-bans and leather coats, just in case.

It frightens me that I use his OCR software. I didn't know he'd gone insane. This has to be the same Ray Kurzweil, right? I mean, how many Ray Kurzweils are running around? Now I sort of want to see this movie.
