Dick Tracy Cartoon

When you read the down-and-dirty naturalism and noir in the early Dick Tracy strips, you have to ask yourself how the concept ever came to include a canine detective named Hemlock Holmes.

What's with the sound on this?

I saw the Dick Tracy cartoon as an 8 year old and it insulted my intelligence. As obnoxious as the talking dog is, the other police characters were worse: A "rotsa ruck"-speaking slanty-eyed "Jap" and a Mexican cop who dressed and talked like the Frito Bandito, complete with bare feet, sombrero and bandolier of bullets. Dick Tracy did exactly what you see him do hear, talk on his radio and otherwise do nothing. And he held the radio over his mouth, so that they didn't have to animate even THAT.

The really amazing thing about this dreadful racist crap is that it began running on TV again when the Warren Beatty Dick Tracy movie came out. That's right, in 1990 they didn't think anyone would be offended by racist caricatures. They should've just put Tracy in blackface and be done with it.

Actually these cartoons were from the 1960s (Jan. 1, 1961 to Jan. 1, 1962) and, yes they were pretty crappy then too. The Irish detective, though he might have been a beat cop, was "Heap O'Calories" and the Japanese detective was "Joe Jitsu" and the Mexican one was "Go Go Gomez". The series was produced by Henry Saperstein of Mr. Magoo fame. Ya got a problem with cultural diversity?

well as long as he didn't descriminate, he insulted everyone.

Unbelievable. It seems like a lame cartoon that uses Dick Tracy's name to give a veneer of respectability.

Dick Tracy Rogues Gallery (alphabetically)
Alec Penn (1932) Had metal plate in skull after being shot while trying to desert from British Army in World War I; postwar WW I career included being a "Don Juan" thief, killer of wealthy women under the alias "Count Gordon", and forging stocks and bonds certificates. The forgeries came to light after Buddy Rogers was rescued by Dick Tracy.Surveillance
