Would I be dating myself if I said: "I remember some of these." or "I remember when buttered popcorn had butter on it."

When I still lived in New York, we had only one drive-in left (I think only one in the whole state). Right up until they closed, they still played these old ads. I remember going for the double features. I saw the movie version of 'The Shadow' there (I don't remember what the second movie was that time).
I miss the drive-in. They actually had FOOD there, too. Does anyone else remember going to the drive-in and getting a hot dog, hamburgers, chips, fries, pizza, etc...?

oh yeah i remember. my mom took some of my friends and me to the drive-in for my birthday one year. we saw a double feature and i only remember 'grand theft auto' with ron howard, i don't remember what the other one was anymore. we had a blast though.

The drive-in was my favorite way to see a movie. There was a playground for the kids, the snack bar for food and the comfort of your car, where you could smoke or have a beer.

Of course, in the 50's, you could smoke in the theaters too.

I'll date myself too...I remember especially the "Let's all go to the lobby" song that started this montage...

And I remember my parents taking us to the drive-in and hiding soda crackers and peanut butter under the seat because we really couldn't afford the snacks (could barely afford the movie) but I think we got drinks at the snack bar...

Dammit, now I've got that #$%^&*@ song (Let's all go to the lobby...) stuck in my head...

Aieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Ya mean all you did at drive ins was sit and watch the movie? As I looked around, some cars had vacant windows and were slightly steamed up. Other cars seemed to be gently rocking on their springs for some reasons. tongue laugh

And yes I remember that corney song.

And for real buttered popcorn, come to the Collins Road Theatres in Marion Iowa. The owner manager prides himself in providing real buttered popcorn. Plus YOU get to butter however little/much you want. Not the one measly squirt of pretend butter put on by a pimply faced kid behind the counter.

Boooooo...... they cut the one with the hot dog doing flips on the stage. The bun would spread itself open and the hot dog would jump in. All the girls would be tittering right then.

How about 27 kids stuffed into a 1939 Plymouth on "Buck Night". That works out to just under 4cents each to see the double feature.

Then there was this girl whose father had a little Nash Rambler. This was an excellent car for the drive-in as the seats folded flat. No back seat cramps.

Anyone remember the creep that came around checking what was going on in the cars with a flash light?

they did that at the drive-in?

Well butter my britches! I remember this too, from the drive-in, in Detroit. They would play these between the double features. But no creepy guy with a flashlight peeking into cars. You sure he was working for the drive-in Expat? LOL

Didn't say he was working for the drive in but being from the bible belt it wouldn't surprise me. Maybe it was just an early form of birth control?

or just a creepy pervert.

Guess I'm going to have to admit how much this dates me because I clearly remember these ads, bot in the drive-in and at the theatres. One thing that comes sharply to mind is how FAST graphics become dated! And these probably faster than most from the period... they weren't even up to early Disney production standards.

But on the flip side of drive-ins being part of the past... I read somewhere the other day that they're trying to make a comeback, of sorts... more along the lines of raves, with want-to-goers having to call up with a password to find out where the (unlicensed) film will be shown that night. Wish I could remember where I read that... was it here maybe??

Oh... and David... in my hometown (by no means a small town) of Miami, you could smoke in theatres well into the 60's. I can remember going up to the smoking loge (balcony seats) and I didn't start smoking until 1965.

We currently have 2 drive ins close to us. They seem to be most popular with large families as they charge by the car (or van) load and young teens who aren't allowed to "date." However people who live close to them hate them. They complain about all that noise "after 10 o'clock."

Rodney Dabe - You've been to the Brew and View I see. That is always the best part of every movie there!!
