Patty, the farmers in the EU are subsidized to the gills.
For example: For every olive tree a farmer has (s)he gets $15US (aprox.) a year regardless if the olives are harvested or not. On Crete we saw thousands of trees planted on the side of "mountains" that are inaccessible to normal foot traffic and will never be able to be harvested!
