Gothic Kittens

Holly Crawford, 35, from Pennsylvania, is set to go on trial today for cruelty to animals because she was trying to sell Gothic Kittens online. It's not the act of selling the kittens that has Holly in trouble, however. It is the fact that the kittens were pierced (as pictured). When humane officers searched her home in December, they found three kittens with ear, neck and tail piercings. Holly's attorney has posed the question “Why is it a crime to pierce a cat’s ears?” and she claims that she had no cruel intentions. Reader comments on the article (which you can read here) range from "punish the freak" to "if you punish this woman you should also punish people who declaw cats". What's your opinion?

Cows wear ear tags, pigs are tattooed, dogs tails are docked, ears clipped dewclaws removed, cats are declawed, babies are circumcised, and husbands are made to by tampons at the drugstore.

What has this world come to!

Also, it says she put a cock ring on a kittahz tail, which is mean.

"At least one of the kittens had a ring on its tail used to prevent blood flow, causing the tail to fall off in time."

Body adornments, human or animal, look stupid anyway.

Declawing is cruel!

As my old dental hygeinist said "I least with piercings, you remove it but with tattooes you have to have them surgically removed"

I have known women who got their daughters ears pierced when they were 3 or 4 months old. And I'd like to add branding to Expat's list.

The obvious objection is that the piercings are merely ornament, serving no vital purpose as id tags or tattoos might, and, therefore, subject the animals to unnecessary distress. I actually agree with that, and with the idea that this woman should not profit from it. But I have to wonder, why should she be punished while it's ok to do the same thing to an infant with no ability to comprehend or consent? Of course, she wouldn't be allowed to sell the infant either....

Which is worse, de-clawing a kitten, or beating it to death after it wrecks your leather couch?

My kitties have no front claws for this reason, and yes, they still climb trees and hunt quite succesfully!

We adopted a cat from the shelter that had been declawed by its previous owners. We don't let her go outside and we often have to explain to delivery folks why we can't stand there and hold the door open. We have gotten a few "declawing is cruel" comments but we shrug it off, since we didn't do it in the first place.

There has to be a line drawn though between what is acceptable and what is abuse. I feel this woman crossed that line.

When it is no longer possible to buy human slaves anywhere in the world, that will be a good time to start worrying about cat piercing. Until then, it's just not a concern.

Punish people who declaw cats. It is not only cruel, but voids the little furball's warranty.

I agree with Dave - WTF cares.

There are so many really outstandingly cruel things which are being done to humans, we really need to get our priorities in line.

the 'earrings' on that kitten are bellybutton rings and are too heavy for it's ears. the girl is stupid and the cats should be taken away from her, but that's all. oh and, as long as there are murders happening no police time should be wasted on traffic violations. because if we can't stop ALL bad things from happening we shouldn't try to stop any bad things happening.

This pisses me off so much and if this crazy lady was standing in front of me right now, I would end up in jail for beating her. I am sickend by the world we live in. I don't understand cruety to people or animals. I understand declawing a cat as long as you keep that cat indoors after. But when there is NO need to pierce or hurt something, why do it?

I saw a 1 month old baby screaming in the mall because their mother was getting her ears peirced. What's the difference?

Adults using babytalk annoys me. I'm all for humor, but lolcats is just stupidity.

As for the pierced cats, I have a hard time seeing why a couple of pierced cats could possibly be more worthy of your outrage than the dozens of abused animals/spouses/children within a mile of every one of us.
