I'd have guessed it's an Uruk-hai orc that escaped from Middle-earth.
The Houston Press said that "It reeks of perfection," so perhaps it has a compartment that is filled with horseslip.

Hm. Not a horse... but make me four tiny versions of it, and I could see it on a chess board as the knight. Not bad, not bad.
