@Brian: quite possibly. There was a lot of that around, licensed for commercial use and possibly free for personal. Nowaday, of course, that kind of thing happens on Youtube - and a lot of the old stuff is there, too. Look up KPM. (If you're English, you will know at least one of their tunes: Approaching Menace.)

I looked at this further. It’s on archive.org , so the whole collection is downloadable — along with other old sound effects records. Great if you want to give your A/V project a retro feel.

I remember a number of albums that Radio Shack used to offer consisting of recorded machinery and effects. My favorite was the sounds of weapons of war, which ranged from rifles and machine guns all the way up to nuclear weapons.

@KDP: I'll stick to Tchaikovsky and his Ouverture Solenelle 1812, I think. After all, when it gets even Calvin to admit not all classical music is boring, there has to be something in it.
