It's a parody, which is why they had Tony Randall playing against his (perceived) type. Besides, Paul, I don't think you are giving Randall enough credit. At 75 he married a hottie 1/3 his age and then started fathering kids. (All after his first wife died -- and he stayed married to her for 50 years.) The guy really was kind of a mensch.

I could enjoy a movie with Herbert Lom (Chief Inspector Dreyfus) and Terry Thomas as co-stars.

Wilfred Hyde-White and John Le Mesurier won't hurt, either. Amazon has a copy on VHS and a Region 2 DVD.
