Bathrooms walls as teaching tool

1980: At the annual meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, Alan Grogono reported on the results of an experiment to determine the efficacy of bathrooms walls as a teaching tool.

While teaching a class on CPR, he placed educational posters about CPR in the bathroom of one college dormitory, while placing no posters in the bathroom of another. Students housed in the dormitory with the bathroom posters subsequently scored significantly better on the CPR exam than those in the no-poster dormitory. In fact, students in the bathroom-poster dormitory who hadn't even taken the class scored as well as students in the no-poster dorm who had taken the class.

Grogono concluded that bathroom posters could be a useful supplement to CPR training. He also credited his "fascination with restroom communication" to his student days at London Hospital Medical College.

While attending the University of Wisconsin in the late 60's, I saw this bathroom graffiti in one of the restrooms. Above the roll of toilet paper someone had written the words "Free college diplomas, take one" Next to it were the words "Don't knock it, it got me where I am today. Now stop writing on the bathroom wall so I don't have to clean it so often"

What usually appears on walls in a men's room is not for polite society:

"Those who write upon these walls
Roll their s--t in little balls,
And those who read these words of wit
eat those little balls of s--t."

Some of my colleagues (I'm a high school teacher) do this today - recommend to their students that they post their study notes in their home bathroom. I don't as I think its a bit "weird" (LOL). However I might track my students' exam results vis-a-vis the toilet revisers in another class just to see if there is a difference.

A memorable one I saw way back read: "Vote for Nixon in '72. Never switch Dicks in the middle of a screw."

My three favorites, all from truckstop men's rooms in Virginia and North Carolina:

On a toilet seat cover dispenser: "Free Cowboy Hats"
On the wall in a Virginia truck stop: "Man, I HATE this part of Texas"
And on a condom machine: "Don't buy this chewing gum. It tastes like rubber"

I saw that "Don't buy this chewing gum. It tastes like rubber" on a condom machine in SE Florida, too. The same guy must have tried again.
