No budget crisis: Berkeley's dog statues
Artist Scott Donahue earned his $196k because the city of Berkeley, Calif., thought it'd be nice to have statues at both ends of a pedestrian bridge over Interstate 80, and there they are: tributes to man's best friend. But the big monuments also contain little medallion-like thingies with scenes of dogs doing what dogs do, like chasing each other, pointing at birds, humping, and taking a dump. A reporter found a recently-laid-off worker, who was happy to comment on the gov't's priorities. Fox News

Oh those crazy Cali officials!! They've finally gone to the dogs. Hey, I'm a serious dog/cat/animal lover....but if I were paying $200K for a freakin statue on a pedestrian bridge while my state was almost completely out of money...I'd be really, really, really pissed off!!! 😡

I would pay 196,000 for a pedestrian bridge that looked like a giant dog, though. You start on his head, and the other side of the ravine/river/whatever is his tail.

Better yet, a covered pedestrian bridge, walk in the mouth and out below the tail.

In addition to what VM says, all of which applies here, you must take into consideration that this bridge has been under consideration (concept hearings/planning hearings/budgeting hearings/aesthetic hearings/ hearing hearings) in this NIMBY-est of states and cities, for over 5 years.
You remember, back in the olden days, when money grew on trees, the stock market was going to keep going up for ever, and the Bay Area housing market had no ceiling. About 6 months ago.
