California State Fair Fare

This years California State Fair will offer some unusual tastes for those brave and adventurous enough to sample them. Who would like to try scorpions, deep fried and chocolate covered? Or how about a python kabob? Frog? Alligator? For the sweet tooth try the fried moon pies or fried twinkies with powdered sugar and chocolate. Did ya ever notice, everything is better dipped in chocolate? Like bacon, yeah, they have that too!

I've had most of these items at Taste of Chicago and the San Diego & LA County Fairs; this year at the SD County Fair you could buy: Beef Sundaes (Mashed Potatoes, BBQ Beef, Cheese, Gravy, and a Cherry Tomato on top), California Burritos (Carne Asada, French Fries, Guacamole & Sour Cream in a Burrito), Fat Darrell Sandwiches (Chicken Fingers, Fried Mozzarella Sticks and French Fries on a Hoagie Roll), Koolickles (Koolaide marinaded Dill Pickle), Deep Fried White Castle Burgers, Deep Fried Spam, Deep Fried PopTarts, Deep Fried Snickers, Deep Fried Reeses, Deep Fried Klondike Bars, Deep Fried Oreos, Frozen Twinkies, Krispy Kreme Chicken Sandwich (Deep Fried Chicken Puck between two Raspberry Jelly Donuts), Sweet Potato Corn Dogs (Corn Dog rolled in Sweet Potato Hash Browns and then fried), Pickle Corn Dog (Dill Pickle on a stick, battered & fried), Pizza on a Stick, Garlic Battered Mushrooms on a Stick, Garlic Battered Artichokes on a Stick, Deep Fried Jalapeno Macaroni and Cheese on a stick, Fudge Puppy (a Chocolate dipped Belgian Waffle on a stick), Deep Fried Hot Dogs and Chili on Indian Fry Bread, Frosting Shots (just what it sounds like), Chocolate Dipped Pickles, and Deep Fried Butter.

@Expat, what the hell are you talking about? California is maybe in the top 10 most Liberal states in the US right now, which puts it just slightly to the Right of Barry Goldwater.

Oddly, the idea of eating a scorpion doesn't bother me, but the idea of eating a chocolate covered one does.

Now "corn-scorps", that's a food that appeals! 😛

@KDP, California has had 1 Democrat Governor since 1983, and a grand total of 4 since 1899. The Legislature has run about 60% Democrat over the past 10 years, but many of them are Centrist & Rightist Democrats.

true wayne! also this is about food not ancient history! (barry goldwater) 😜

@KDP, ExPat said "By the time the food police in CA get wind of this they'll shut it down;" as a native Californian would you say we allow PETA to dictate what kind of meat we eat? Last I looked I found Frogs Legs, 'Gator, and Snake meat available at specialty stores, and Foi Gras & Veal are openly sold in Supermarkets statewide. That sort of comment is part of what I call "Liberal Inflation;" basically that everyone to the Left of who ever shouts loudest is a "Liberal."

Now, how does that make Barry Goldwater a "Liberal"? Mr Goldwater was Pro-abortion, pro Gays in the Military, pro Medicinal Marijuana, he opposed the Reagan administration's working to overthrow the Nicaraguan Government, opposed the same administration's arms sales to Iran, urged Republicans to lay off the Clintons during the White Water scandal, was vociferously against the rise of the Christian Right (he called Pat Robertson's "700 Club a "moneymaking venture" said that they wanted to "take the Republican party and make a religious organization out of it. If that ever happens, kiss politics goodbye", and when Jerry Falwell opposed Sandra Day O'Connor's nomination to the Supreme Court, saying "Every good Christian should be concerned", Mr Goldwater said "Every good Christian ought to kick Falwell right in the Nuts."), he called the NeoCons a a "bunch of kooks," and told them "[d]o not associate my name with anything you do. You are extremists, and you've hurt the Republican party much more than the Democrats have."

Now, how much to the Left of those positions is your average Mainstream California voter?

@KDP, Here's a quote straight from the Horses Mouth; speaking to Bob Dole about how poorly Mr. Dole did with NeoCons during the '96 Presidential Election, Mr. Goldwater said: "We're the new liberals of the Republican party. Can you imagine that?"

I've always thought Rattlesnake tasted more like a milder & chewier Frogs Legs, and that frogs legs had a consistency like Shrimp but a taste like a mild fresh water fish like Perch. Gator tail meat is like a cross between Frogs Legs & Veal, and the leg meat, or "Gator Wings," was like a cross between Frogs Legs & Game Bird.

ah that elusive cross between gross and disgusting. 😜 sorry if you like it freddie, but i think i have mentioned before, i don't do alternate meats. i'm not eating anything that it would gross me out to touch when alive either. yuck!

Hey someone point me to the place where you post stuff. I'm about to do something really stupid and I want to post it here.

Oh, and something I saw recently about frog legs: (sfw but maybe not for tummies)

@Robert, I just found a news article from the 23rd saying the Python was still on the menu, but I can't find anything about the Lion; when Lion gets pulled from menus it's usually because the store or restaurant can't prove provenance of the meat, meaning they can't prove it didn't come from wild animals poached in Africa instead of being raised on farms in Texas for millionaires to shoot while the lions are tied to a stake (plus, Lion is a nasty, gamey meat that no one wants to ever have a second serving of). Kangaroo is still available from my local exotic butcher, and I don't expect it to ever disappear from exotic meat menus around the world.

You do know that PETA is a teeny-tiny group with no political power, right? Their International membership is less than 2/3 of 1% of the United States population, and they've never been able to get anyone elected or any law passed at any level of governmentanywhere in the world: Local, State, or Federal. They have no power to stop anyone from serving any kind of meat any where in the world. You know how they got McDonalds, Burger King & Wendy's to server Veggie Burgers? They got their members to buy shares of stock 'til they held enough to affect board elections, and then asked nicely. Pretty much every other campaign of theirs have been jokes perpetrated by a bunch of Media Sluts.

So, if anyone is telling you "PETA did it" for these food servers taking the exotic meat off the menu, I'd say they either ran afoul of the USDA for not having the right permits, or they did it themselves for some other reason (they ran out early, sales weren't big enough to make up for the cost, etc) and they are just trying to pin the blame on the Bogeyman.
Posted by Freddie Freelance on 07/24/10 at 08:25 PM
freddie, we blame peta for everything, it is just one of our things like bacon worship or choclate idoatry. peta is our boogieman!
Posted by Patty in Ohio, USA on 07/24/10 at 08:33 PM
I found articles about PETA protesting Butter Sculpture at the Iowa State Fair, protesting cleanliness issues in Petting Zoos at State & County Fairs, suing the California Milk & Dairy Board saying that their cows "weren't that happy," and various other stupid "look at MEEEEEE!" protests, but I can't even find a post on PETA.org, any other PETA related animal rights site, or any news bureau saying anything about them protesting at the California State Fair or protesting Python meat anywhere, and PETA won't even Fart without a press release.
