Chicken Deception Criminalized

Be careful in Zimbabwe. If you serve your husband the gizzard, wings and a drumstick instead of the breast and "back portions", you may get hauled to tribal court and fined ... wait for it...

Here's the link.

The part that really angered the husband was the the wife had eaten the "best parts", which are reserved for the husband by local custom.

But everyone seems fine with the assault and possible divorce facing the 24 year old wife. Even the grandmother was charged with "dereliction of duty" for not teaching her grand-daughter "the rules".

Makes me glad I don't live in Nkayi. Or Zimbabwe.

Sorry to readers living in Nkayi and Zimbabwe.

As long as her breasts and thighs were offered for "dessert" I wouldn't be upset.

FYI the site is getting spammed with "News In ______" posts.

While the "legal sanctions" are odd, the idea that the man gets the best of the meal isn't unusual at all. Even when I was little, my grandmother (old country Italian) chastised my dad for giving me my choice of the chicken parts (drumstick, of course) before he took what he wanted. Things had gotten pretty loose by the time I came along because we all sat at the table together but my older cousins remember how, at large family gatherings, the men would be seated and get to eat first, then the kids, then the women. I think this may have been partly a plan on the part of the women so that they could actually sit and eat in peace once everyone else was done instead of having to pop up to deal with cutting kids' food, getting salt for men who suddenly forgot how to walk, etc. , and having their food get cold. If I know my aunts, I think they may have held a few special dishes back for themselves, too.

Chris Rock talks/jokes about this very subject in THIS (NSFW/language) CLIP! He says it's all about respect.

Back in the day men often worked long hours at physically taxing jobs and women stayed home to take care of the household and children. The men needed the larger meal to keep going as the only bread winner. Now most families have 2 breadwinners and do not have the same concerns. But with some older people old habits die hard.
Cris Rock's "big piece of chicken" bit is hilarious!
