Holloway's Pills and Ointment were apparently miraculous as seen by the number of ailments they could cure. But I was curious about two of the more obscure ills, and managed to track them down.

Yes, the treatment could cure leprosy! The second disorder is much less severe.

For years, I've been trying to track down "Thrumps." It's one of the diseases listed on the sign outside a herbalist's shop in the movie "Bell, Book and Candle" (1958) (aside: this is a perfectly wonderful movie! I can't stress too strongly that everyone should watch it).

Other than a definition of it as a sound, the only thing I've ever been able to find is other people asking what it is. (Of course, these days, both Google and Bing insist I'm misspelling 'Trump' and only return hits for him.)

A chigger is a mite that attaches much like a tick but (if memory serves) is MUCH smaller. I think it's the larvae that bite. And OH BABY do those bad boys ITCH! Causes red welts or blisters. Horrible.

I had to go look up chilblains. I've heard the term but never knew what they were. A sort of allergic reaction to cold weather. Hmm...
Now off to see "Bell Book and Candle" again! Jimmy Stewart to enjoy and Kim Novak to enjoy looking at. Can't go wrong!

Chigger bites can kill you, though... ask anyone who's played a Scott Adams adventure.

Did anyone miss sore nipples or bad breasts? I'm reminded of numerous patent medicine selling characters played by W.C. Fields as I read the list.

"Cures all sorts of hoarseness!"

I always thought sore-heads was a problem describing other people. Whatever it means as an affliction, I'm sure I don't want it, any more than I want bad breasts, fistulas, or the rest.

I'm fairly certain Contracted Joints was Snoop Dogg's original band-name.

@KDP: Believe me, you don't want sore nipples. About ten years ago, I was prescribed spironolactone to deal with ascites. Nipple problems are a known side effect of this drug whether the patient is male or female. Thankfully, the soreness went away after I discontinued taking the medication.

Cocobay is a resort in Antigua & Barbuda. I wonder if it's a former leper colony.
