Condom Hut

Back in 1992, Emanuelle Del Vecchio had an idea for a great new business — a drive-through condom store. She called it "Condom Hut" and set up shop in a former Fotomat booth.

Unfortunately the booth was located in an area of Cranston, Rhode Island populated by very Catholic Italian-Americans, many of whom took great offense at the idea of people being able to buy birth control from the comfort of their motor vehicle.

Local residents began protesting the store. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence condemned it for "promoting sexual activity, not abstinence." A rock was thrown through its window. Graffiti was spray-painted on its front. And eventually the business folded.

America was just not ready for a drive-through condom store.

All the hate aimed at the business is, in fact, very Christian just not very close to the teachings of it's namesake.

"... many of whom took great offense at the idea of people being able to enjoy the pleasure of coitus."

There, fixed it for ya.

Drive through condoms, sounds like a good idea for the couple, married or not, looking for a quickie or horny teens ready to get some in the back seat or park.

Lets face it sex is fun, that's why it's so popular, even the clergy of various denominations including the catholic church like it. But being pleasure, it must be sinful and bad and hence a ticket to hell.

As a teen wise old dad told me as he held up a condom, (early sixties). Best twenty five cents you will ever spend kid, Never get caught without one, it's much cheaper then a doctors bill or 18 years of child support. There was always a supply in our bathrooms, no questions asked.

Its a shame those good Catholics weren't more concerned with what the Priests were doing to the Alter boys. Like the late Robin Williams once said, "Its not just a sin its a felony so we have to keep track." But hey, at least they weren't using those sinful condoms. Or, people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones at the Condom Hut.

Emanuelle Del Vecchio - Isn't that one of the twins that Fonzie was always going out with?

Oh yeah, Emanuelle was the name of a soft porn series on Cinemax too!

@Patty -- The original Emmanuelle series was theatrical-release movies. I think there were five or six of them. Very, very racy for their day. The TV-movies were a spin-off.

The originals were actually quite good, far above what you'd expect considering how they were marketed. I never saw the TV-movies.

I didn't know that Phideaux. I've only ever seen the ones on Cinemax.
