Crucified Chicken

Deborah Sengl's "crucified chicken" is currently on display at the city museum of Wiener Neustadt, in Austria. A lot of catholics don't like it one bit, but Sengl insists she's being misunderstood. It's not about christianity, she says. Instead it's "a statement about the pain inflicted by butchers during food processing."

Marie Antoinette was beheaded not crucified the same is true of chickens. Big difference there I'd say. Also I think she is the one who does not understand just how offensive her "art" is. Dress a chicken up as Mohammed and I am sure the extremists would teach her the difference. Ask that Rushdie fellow.

Since when did "The Church" own crucifixion? The Romans, et al, were at it long before JC came on the scene.

And, yup, all those years helping out on the farm I never saw one chicken on a cross. There were quite a few running around without any heads though.

Any time art and religion cross paths it will always be offensive to those that practise that particular religion because to them theirs is the only true belief.

Sorry, F.U.D., but 'religion' controlled art for centuries and supported it for many more. Think 'The Dutch Masters' and 'The Sistine Chapel' for examples.

You just proved my point. When you say "religion" you mean christianity. Sorry24

One of my memories from maybe 4 years old was the drama (Not trauma) of being chased by a headless chicken. The worst part was my 3 year older sister laughing.

Whenever anyone says that a piece of artistic expression offends their god, I tell them that if that's true, Then your god is a wus! If anything truly offended a god, I would expect said god to smite it in some dramatic even god-like fashion! Y'All know what I mean? Pillar of salt, Bolt of lightening, 40 day flood, LIKE :26 IN ON THIS CLIP!

"Above all else, the devil cannot stand to be mocked." - C.S. Lewis (attrib)
Whether it involves crucified chickens, cartoons of Mohammed, or rodeo clowns with political masks, the old double standard of our own insecurities is still with us.
A healthy ideology CAN stand to be mocked. Irish always tell the best Irish jokes, Aggies tell good Aggie jokes, etc. The word "Yankee" was intended to be an insult when the Loyalists (Tories) used it, but the Whigs (Patriots) wore it as a badge of honor.
I learned as a child, "If you can't laugh at yourself, you are taking yourself too seriously."
