Disruptive Kitty Litter

BusinessWeek has ranked Kitty Litter at #73 in its list of the "85 most disruptive ideas in our history." It notes that the idea to market clay as cat litter, which happened in 1947, "meant that after millennia of scratching at the door cats could come indoors and stay there. They had long been visitors in American homes; now they were residents. In some ways it has been a hostile takeover: There are millions more cats than dogs in the U.S."

I had never thought of cat litter as a disruptive idea before. But yeah, I can definitely see the part about the hostile takeover, as I've been a victim of that takeover, enslaved to the whims of a cat.

Meanwhile, for the neighbours of the cat, it's a decidedly anti-disruptive invention.

I've had two cats over the years. One was left to me by an ex-girlfriend when she moved away. The other was one that just wandered in and stayed. Both were well mannered as far as cats go. The only complaint was buying food for the little buggers. I'd swear that they would stand behind me and inspect the cupboard for food flavors. Whatever I had the most of, that's the flavor they wouldn't eat. As far as cat food flavors go, why is there no butt flavored cat food because they are always licking their own?

I only have to scoop the litter box once a day. Without it I would have been acting as the cat's doorman many times a day. Another brilliant idea was the cat-sized pet door.
Cats are highly skilled at getting their human servants to invent things that make life more convenient in the cat's kingdom.

When I lived on a farmstead, we had one cat who wanted in each time he needed to use the litter box, after which he wanted out again.
