Doggie DNA

DNA has finally jumped the shark. An apartment complex in Lebanon, NH Is now requiring doggie DNA samples in the leases. This is in order to catch owners who do not clean up after Fido. Samples of poop litter will be tested and the DNA checked against resident dog samples. If the DNA matches one of the resident dogs the owner of the guilty K9 will be fined according to management.

Definitely one for the 'Get a Life' catagory!

Wouldn't it be cheaper to hire someone to scoop the poop. Maybe (s)he could be given a uniform and gold plated shovel & tongs and a silver bucket to put it into. I mean, really, does Oprah scoop at the mini-park across from her penthouse?

I understand that the dog owners will be required to provide a specimen of puppy poo as a comparison. Will the caca KGB verify that the sample comes from the correct pooch? What about the chain of evidence? I agree with ExPat, except I'd add surveillance cameras, too.

They probably give Oprah a free pass at the doggy park considering how much of that stuff she already shovels on her T V show.

Also, if you consider that in addition to paying a fine for not cleaning up after Fido the tenant would also have to pay for the expensive DNA test it would be quite an incentive.

The only downside for the apartment complex is if they have to pay for a whole bunch of DNA tests for poop left by non tenant dogs. Couldn't you just see one of the tenants with a gripe paying off a dog walker to just "drop" by. I bet the apartment management would change that policy in a hurry.

And I also think a closed circuit surveillance system would be a hell of a lot cheaper and provide better security as a bonus.
