dolphins are known to be exstremely intelegent and playful, so finding them doing stuff just for the fun of it makes sense. they are fascinating animals.

Dolphins will eventually rule the earth, solely because they are more violent that we are.
I especially like the line in the following article; 'If dolphins ever evolve thumbs, we're in trouble.'

As a point to ponder, Mythbusters determined that the silhouette of a dolphin causes Great Whites to stop attacking the shark cage and just loiter (presumably doing the shark equivalent of whistling tunelessly). Sounds like Danny53 is right.

dave, if you read the story, you will find that it says dolphins in captivity are taught this trick. one of the dolphins in the story was in captivity for a time and learned it. later when he was released the animal would do the trick in the wild for no discernable reason other than to amuse himself. He then taught other dolphins how to do it and they do it while at play too. it is not something ever seen being done by wild dolphins before. therein lies the interest.

Dolphins have also been found as one of the few species like humans who will have sex just for fun instead of specifically for reproduction. BTW if you read my comment on the above article be assured all the "tuna" I fingered in HS was dolphin safe 😜
