I'd guess that part of the appeal was the "only 150watts" as this new fangled stuff coming into the house on wires would have been expensive.

My Gran didn't have a toaster until well into the 70s. She would turn on the electric eye of the stove, put a small wire trivet with a square mesh over it, and toast the bread one side at a time. We called it her tartan toast because of the pattern left by the trivet.
