Elective Prosthetics

With advances in prosthetic functionality they are starting to give users above human capabilities. Now the director of MIT Media Lab's Biomechatronics Group, Hugh Herr is claiming they will soon make those wearing them sexier as well. Herr states that prosthetics will become like accessories, perhaps being requested as an elective procedure to enhance both abilities and looks. He points out how the newest gadgets, ipods. iphones, ect. become must haves for the masses and coolest new prosthetics could as well. I can't imagine requesting an amputation to get fast and cool looking prosthetic legs, but who knows?

i don't see elective amputations becoming popular. it's kind of creepy to think about.

it is creepy and I wouldn't do it, personally. but if I ever needed prosthetics, I'd definitely go for the funky cool ones over the old fashioned realistic limb ones.

If the chick in the photo will promise to love me I'll go for it.

Hell, I'll consider it if she just blows me a kiss. 💋

'Additionally, Herr believes that, as prostheses change from restoring lost ability to providing abilities beyond normal capabilities, not only people will actually want to trade in functioning flesh body parts for more powerful robotic appendages, but for better-looking ones as well.'

the director of that lab seems to think it will become an accepted practice. but then he's hoping it will because that's where his bread is buttered so to speak.

i don't think it will become something people clammor for the 'right' to do even if it were allowed. i don't look for that to happen either though. there are a certain percent of crazies that want stuff like this but as a common practice never.

There was a CSI : New York episode about a man who felt his leg was the root of all his problems and paid a guy to cut it off for him (he died from infection) ... during the investigation they interviewed several people who were "wannabe" amputees - people who would strap their leg up behind them, or their arm in a sleeve, to make it appear as though the limb was no longer there. They'd be the first in line for this kind of thing.
