I think the tape record is there to record the Whistling Mother (Whistler's mother). She's probably whistling Big Noise from Winnetka.

"Whistler's Mother" is in Paris. If you don't want to go across the Atlantic, you can see "Whistler's Father" at the Frick Collection in Manhattan.
