These are about the same size as the Cicada Hawk (Sphecius speciosus) I captured a few years ago in Amarillo.

Aren't they awesome. I've seen hornets in France, but these would be amazing to see.

We have Tarantula Hawks in the Southwest that are similar. They are solitary so no hives or swarms. Easy to avoid if you're desert savvy.

Holy crap!!!! I'd heard they'd had these things stinging a few people to death over in Japan, but I had no idea how huge they are. Looking at that picture, all I can think is "tracker-jackers are real!"
