Somebody was trying to cash in on the popularity of Al Capp's "Lil' Abner" - but without the busty babes (Daisy Mae, Stupefyin' Jones, Wolf Gal, etc.) that made the comic strip so popular with the WWII GIs.

Barely comprehensible English with odd contractions, misplaced syllable emphasis and elongated vowels - yeah that pretty much makes someone out to be a hillbilly. Make them go around barefoot and that completes the picture.

Growing up, I had a friend in school whose family was from New York. They were genuinely suprised to find that Tennesseans (and Southerners in general) could read, wore shoes, had electricity and indoor plumbing and most/all of their teeth. 😊

I called my grandpa a hillbilly once and his reply was perfect, "We're NOT hillbillies, We're Mountaineers!"
