History of the Cootie Game

According to wikipedia, the Cootie Game was so popular, selling millions of copies, that it's now considered a symbol for the baby boomer generation. But as a Gen-Xer, I grew up without any knowledge of this classic.

I had one of the 'regular' size! 'Cooties', BTW, were/are head lice which were very prevalent until the 50's (after the war). I've heard that they made a few comebacks since then.

There was a larger, "cuter" version of Cooties that were released in the 1980s. I had one of those.

I had the version pictured at the top in the early '60's and have the newer '80's version for use with kids at work now. I like the earlier version better. The pieces were easier to put together for little ones. I remember playing with the cooties, but I don't remember playing the actual game.
ExPat, we still have "head check" periodically and there is nearly always at least one ID'd case. I've never had them despite close contact with many kids who have. It makes my head itchy just to think of it, though.

40 years of teaching and the wife only got nailed once and we think it was from a neighbor kid she was helping. Go Figure!

In the newer versions, the only number you have to get more than one of is a six.
