Cute and homey, but a waste of time.

There are guys who track special edition cars going to dealerships without proper security. When they find enough places, they put together a tour map. A crew can spend two months on the road, hitting three or four places a week.

Lots of people get a cut of the profits -- the original guy, the advance man (checks out the lot the day before to see if the cars are there and checks out when the cops drive past), the lookouts (to watch for and/or draw off any cops who happen by), and the pit-crew-like team to do the actual stripping, but when a set of wheels is in the $10,000+ range and you're getting 70 or 80 sets, everyone walks away with a lot of money for very little risk.

Phideaux, you gotta give him points for trying to play the honor among thieves game. The perpetrators could very well be locals.

This happened 9mos ago and no thieves have been caught to date. This guy, however, by simply making the $20,000 offer/promise gained some serious credit with the locals. He, most likely, got $20k worth of warm-fuzzy out of it.
