As an Orthodox Jew who used to own a dog, this was definitely on my radar. Most dog foods obviously contain meat, so I had to make sure they didn't also contain milk (think Milk Bone). As the article says, Passover presents a different problem. At other times, we fed our dog dry food that contained grain. For Passover, we gave him Mighty Dog that contained bacon, but no grain. So ironically, something with bacon in it was permissible while something with beef or lamb or whatever wasn't.

@ges: an orthodox Jew owning a dog? I may be missing a lot of nuance here, but surely dogs are unclean, and you're not supposed to touch let alone own them?

Richard, you may be confusing Muslims with Jews.

It is indeed okay for Jewish people to own dogs, as long as they don't bite.
