Loony Lids, 1951 toy

Sold by The Ideal Toy Corp: "Inflatable Vinylite headpieces for children, built in the shape of lions, elephants, horses, and roosters. A few puffs of air inflate each 'lid,' and a cord under the chin secures it."

Insanity quickly follows.

This is a new one on me and I was around way, way back then in the middle of last century.

The kids in the photo look like rejects from a low budget production of The Lion King.

I guess back in the 50's hallucinogens just weren't as common, so you actually had to dress up as a crazy chimeric horse-god to give your friend a spiritual experience. You couldn't just giggle a little bit, break open a pack of glow sticks and let the rest take care of itself.

Why does this bring back memories of blotter acid we had back in my younger crazier days ?

That would sure scary the hell out of an acid head if their kid came home in one of those!
