This device was developed for paraplegics who wanted to take up or continue skiing. Obviously they need a helper to go along in case of a spill, but those who can use them are surprisingly adept at getting to the bottom.

Also, there was a single ski binding where you stood upright on a single ski that I remember from the early 1970's. It never took off as a product. The name Burton comes to mind - possibly the same Burton associated with snowboards.

My first thought was that people are so lazy they have to sit to ski.
