Answer: They're some of the titles of the Haitian aristocracy in the early 19th century. The Haitian court modeled itself after the French court, and so the nobility gave itself fancy titles. But the names were taken from things and places in the surrounding countryside, and often sounded rather unusual. The Duke of Varieties was so named because he had a reputation for cheating on his wife. (i.e. he liked variety).
