Damn! My first thought was that it had to be something to do with Salvador Dali.

Half right - I guessed things left behind in an abandoned building.

Sort of in the ballpark, kinda -- I thought it might be stuff left behind after a Grateful Dead concert.

But, as happens all too often, it sparked a mental image, and so now I have to add one more item to my list of things to do if I ever win Powerball -- buy a container of cheap headstones from China and leave them in odd places.

I heard an interview with a member of the group "Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show" (now that's reaching back into the Stoned Age) relating that he had a prosthetic eye and how he once left it in a pant pocket when he sent his laundry out. It did not return. It struck him that he now had a ready reply to those who would ask that awkward question about how he had lost his eye: "I lost it at the laundromat."

Those Irish must have a different idea about a cistern. What I think of is something that you certainly can't schlep around with you, not even in checked luggage. It's at least the size of a small swimming pool – built in the ground of concrete – and meant to stay put.

In a weird coincidence, I saw an article about the headstone in a news feed earlier the same day.

Virtual: a cistern is also the flush tank of a toilet - in this case, presumably of the same toilet that seat belonged to (or was going to belong to).

Richard, I don't recall coming across this usage. I would say toilet tank or flush tank. Actually, "loo box" seems better yet; I believe I'll use that now.
