Answer:

These items are the entirety of the possessions of Peace Pilgrim, an American woman who was called to leave behind her previous life, and her name, to walk 25,000 miles for peace. She began her pilgrimage on January 1, 1953 at the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, vowing to “remain a wanderer until mankind has learned the way of peace.” She walked those 25,000 miles in nine years and kept going for another 19 years, walking through all US states, all Canadian provinces, and parts of Mexico. She never carried or used money again: “I walk until given shelter; I fast until given food.” Peace Pilgrim was killed in a head-on car crash in July, 1981.
