Tashiro-jima, Japan: It’s an island of 100 people, oodles of feral felines (each practicing self-hatred because it lacks tiger genes), and various monuments and chachkas in the image of cats, created by adoring visitors. Japanese don’t need a visa to visit, but if Yr Editor were running it, a note from your shrink would be required. Mother Nature Network

Yangzhou City, China: Shanghai Daily reported that Shangmao kindergarten had instituted a new fee--for parents who want the teachers to actually hug their kids: once in the morning, upon arrival, and once in the afternoon, upon departure. About US$12.80 a month. Shanghai Daily

Guangzhou, China: Speaking of fees, hey, how ‘bout those airline baggage fees, huh? It says here that this fella showed up at Guangzhou Baiyun Int’l bent on avoiding the fee. He was wearing 60 shirts and 9 prs of jeans. [Rim shot!] The Nation (Bangkok)

Hutchinson, Kan.: It says here that the 7-month-old girl had a lump in her neck. ER doctors in Wichita hypothesized that she had once stuck a bird feather in her mouth, that it migrated through her tissue and started to protrude from her neck. An ER doctor, ummm, just pulled it out through her skin. [ed.: OK, good point, but I’m supposed to know that how?] CBS News

Buffalo, N.Y.: Behold the inspiring small-business entrepreneurial spirit of Eric Gonzalez-Cerino. A McD’s called police because Eric was dealing drugs on the property. Police said that when they arrived, Eric kept selling and told them that he wasn’t leaving until he was done. Buffalo News

Pambopata National Park, Peru: We welcome our future spider overlords. Biologist Phil Torres reported observing a spider in the Rainforest meticulously constructing a “decoy” spider made of “tiny bits of leaf, debris, and dead insects,” and the real spider able to nudge the decoy too-and-fro so that predators get distracted into thinking that that one is the real spider. Tashiro-jima, Japan: Greek giros on the hoof!

Yangzhou City, China: You'd have to come up with a hell of a lot more than $12.80 to get me that close to a pack of feral toddlers!

Hutchinson, Kan.: This story tickled me when I first read it.

Buffalo, NY You'd think that anything to get one through a winter up there would be tolerated!

Pambopata, Peru: Nature is pretty amazing! But, as I read the story I learned that these spiders are only found in a particular flood plain so I think we should send all our tree hugging, bug loving, meddling, uber-do-gooders down there to help divert the river.

So long, Chuck, and thanks for years of good reading.... Now, if the representative looks like a young version of Morena Baccarin I'll call it heaven!

Hugging fee: I'm with Expat on this one.

Feather girl: OK, that's definitely weird.

Buffalo: so, where does the GOP sit on this one? He's an entrepreneur, but not in the sort of things that law-abiding folks will put up with.

Baggage fees: I'm glad I wasn't in the seat next to him. Speaking of which, how did he fit in the seat? Or even bend in the middle to sit?

Expat, it's been good knowing you. Extra points to whomever is the first to see their house from up there...
