Odor-based Alarms

Alex's recent run of Weird Patents reminded me of the attempts to base an alarm device on smells.

Given that one of the possible symptoms of covid-19 is loss of the sense of smell, these alarms aren't foolproof. The typical alarm for people with hearing impairments uses a bed shaker, a vibrating device placed under the mattress.

I thought those alarm were supposed to wake people up when they smell something, like smoke, ripe blue cheese, bad socks, room temp durian, mold or an excess amount of bodily waste.
