The Safety Smoker

The "safety smoker," invented by Glen R. Foote of Cincinnati, promised to allow people to safely smoke "in places where the danger from flying or falling sparks is likely to start a conflagration or cause an explosion."

Perfect for anyone hankering for a smoke in an oil refinery.

The smoker looks a lot like Leonard Strong, who played the hitchhiker in the classic Twilight Zone episode called The Hitch-Hiker. But Strong would have only been about 25 years old at the time this ad appeared.

Your furniture and rugs will be safe. Your lungs, not so much.

If you want to save money, you can always smoke your cigarette backwards, like some Indian and South-Asian women do. Apparently, it's a great way to protect children and furniture from cigarette ashes, and the cigarette lasts longer that way. However, you must be ready to put the burning part of the cigarette in your mouth, and the filter will be useless.

Yudith -- that's called reverse smoking. I had a post about it several years ago:

At a cocktail party years ago, I noticed a smoker looking around for an ashtray then decide to flick his ashes into his drink. He was obviously unaware he could simply smoke the cigarette backward and eat the ashes.

It sounds like a great trick to whip out at a party nowadays. You tell folks that you are saving them from the secondhand smoke. Also, it doesn't have to be a cocktail party. If it's a pot party, you just smoke the joint backward – unannounced of course – and see who notices (or if anyone does).

There are some very important questions raised here. As with cigarettes, will your stash last 88% longer when you smoke it backward? Also, can 2 people smoke a joint simultaneously – one smoking it forward and the other smoking it backward? Does this make it possible to smoke during sex? Experimentation in the field seems to be the best solution.

Virtual in Carnate -- that's called a "buckshot". See the movie C.R.A.Z.Y. for more details.
