I wonder how the first culture to use waste disposing systems motivated their toilet cleaners?

He is very enthusiastic -- but he has a point. If folks are told WHY their jobs are more important than they may have realized, so that they have some sense of accomplishment, they are more likely to have a sense of pride in their work -- even if it is scut work. Of course, decent pay helps, too.

I didn't realize his comment about it being in my home town newspaper. I guess I should read it more instead of all the recent shootings and felony reports.

People in general respond better to specific instructions if the reason why they are specific is explained. I have also found that, for me at least, knowing why things are to be done in a particular order makes it easier to remember that order.

Crummy jobs tend to pay badly, so persuasion or desperation are essential. The silver lining, if it is there at all, is the strong motivation to get another job.
