Soviets Eat Bambi

In 1985, a Soviet production of a live-action film about Bambi (Bambi's Childhood) had to be halted when three of the deer who were playing Bambi and his friends disappeared. Turned out they had been stolen, then butchered and served as the main course at a birthday celebration. The culprits were sent to a labor camp as punishment for their crime.

The news was reported in a lot of papers, but the Weekly World News (below) had the best coverage of it.

Venison is much better than beef for those special occasions.

Also, on a serious note: I'd invite everyone to (re)read Bambi by Felix Salten. This is the original writing and not the Disney-fied version. It really is a very powerful story that is, probably, more intune with what is happening on the streets of America than when he wrote it.

I had Bambi read to me as a tyke, watched Disney's version growing up then read the book again when I was about 30 (a few years ago) and was very surprised. It's hard to find but Amazon say they've got it for about $3.

I'm sure those drunken Russians swilled vodka with their meal. Silly russkis, everyone knows a good Merlot goes with venison.

Six years of hard labour for one and four years in a labour camp for the other? Does any one know what the sentence for killing three people while drunk driving in Russia would be?

Don't mess with the animal actors in a commie kids movie.
