I'd love to see them build something like this, but 110 miles tall. No fancy materials, no arcane engineering, just plop down enough concrete to make a self-supporting cone reaching into space. At the top, rig up an Eskimo-yo-yo-like device to spin probes up to escape velocity, and start firing them in all directions.

A structure like this might attract a few BASE jumpers, too.
