I bought a replica of one of these when we were on the isle of Samos. Pretty mind-blowing stuff.

As a chemistry student I used a Soxhlet extractor. The cup drains into a flask that is continually boiling, and the vapors rise into a condensor to drip back down into the cup. When the cup gets refilled enough, it cycles again.

At a kids museum we bought a thing that you screwed two 2 liter bottles into after filling one with water. Then set it down and it did that too.

More to the point, doesn't anyone look at what they drink any more? I dunno about you, but I'd be suspicious if some weird contraption turned up inside what seemed to be an ordinary mug or cup.
