Spike Jones had a routine where he poked fun at movie actors who didn't survive the transition from silent to sound because of their atrocious vocal abilities.

So, ges, I guess that question could only be answered with the invention of television.

For that matter, ges, I've never been able to completely wrap my head around the idea that a ventriloquist could be a radio star.
