The marker says cholera as a c.o.d., but the newsprint seems to point to acute lead poisoning as a more likely cause.

Time was compressed in 1850. He died 15 minutes after he was shot in August, which was November 27.

This begins to explain California. Sacramento was a bunch of crazies back then, too.

The wiki page from the link has some more information about the incident, what led up to same, and the aftermath. The wiki page has a different take on the wounds suffered by the mayor which would explain his death timeline.
