I do believe that the USPS's day is coming to an end. They may be around in some VERY diminished mode in the future but they're bleeding money delivering only the junk mail.

Around 1972 a friend's father, who was a Postal Service employee once pointed out to me, "It's not 'junk mail', it's 'bulk delivery'." I had the distinct impression he was very annoyed.

I really think they should just cut back on delivery days .. Especially Saturday. I can wait until the weekend is over to get my bills and junk mail. I would not mind even a Mon - Wed - Fri delivery. Just deliver Priority mail and packages on the off days.

Charge first class rates for junk mail and third class rates for first class mail. You will bring people back in droves for the cheaper rate and in appreciation for scaled back junk mail.

From what I've read, junk mail is their main profit center. Sorting and combining sorts from various sources requires a lot more time and effort than plopping down a pallet and having every delivery person grab their pre-sorted bundle.

Personally, I've found USPS to be fantastic. I've never had a problem that was their fault. UPS is so bad, I refuse to have anything shipped that way. FedEX (air) is great but usually far too expensive. I've heard mixed things about FedExGround but have never dealt with them.
