Since I own several parrots, and have owned a small toucan, I can tell you I have no idea how the monkey survived getting close to the macaw. Presumably, the macaw filed it under "too small to bother with" to start with, and went on from there. That macaw is perfectly capable of taking the monkey's arm off with one bite. A toucan wouldn't have put up with the monkey at all, at least, not the smaller toucans. They don't have the Guinness / Froot Loops bill, but instead they have a long pointy beak, which they use as a stabbing dagger to defend themselves. I can tell you from personal experience, they go for the eyes of their opponent.
