Woman coughs out lung

A case report in the New England Journal of Medicine describes a woman who coughed so hard that she pushed her lung out through her ribs. That's got to be painful.

According to msnbc.com, violent coughing can also result in collapsed lungs, ruptured spleens, and eyeballs coming out of their sockets. Lovely!

This hits close to home for me because my wife occasionally suffers from an intense cough. She may go for several years without any problems, but when "The Cough" (as we call it) returns, it's always pretty bad. And it usually takes several months for it to go away. Thankfully it's been a while since she last had The Cough. (knock on wood).

How miserable and painful for the poor woman. I have a dear friend who gets a bad cough fairly often when the weather changes and I always worry about her when she has it. I hope your wife continues her healthy streak too Alex.

Not to belittle this woman's plight but isn't this the 2ed "weird" lung story to hit the news recently? Are we awaiting #3?

Is it fate of does one story sensitize reporters to the subject and make it seem more news-worthy? Inquiring minds want to know and, in the vernacular of the reporters, "America has a RIGHT to know!"

My wife has, over the years, broken almost all her ribs through coughing. The good news is that the new generation of inhalers that came out several years ago have greatly improved things.

Wow, Scot that is rough. I am glad the meds have improved and she is doing better. My mother-in-law had asthma and her inhalers helped a lot.
