More Things to Worry About on Monday

The Terrell Tribune (in Terrell, Tex., pop. 13,000, 30 miles east of Dallas) made the news last week by (a) not reporting Obama's historic victory atop page 1 but (b) instead headlining a county commissioner's race ("We run a newspaper, not a memory book service," said the publisher). WFAA-TV (Dallas-Fort Worth)

In Turkey, Obama's victory was bad for sheep: 44 got the knife because, of course, some Muslims celebrate by sacrificing animals. Associated Press via Fox News

To end complaints about discrimination, Sweden will start furnishing free prosthetic penii to F-to-M transsexuals just like the health service furnishes free breasts and wigs to M-to-F's. (Negative bonus: The prosthetics are just for show; they don't actually work) The Local (Stockholm)

Looks like Mark Castillo, awaiting trial for drowning his three kids, is holding up his wife's pending divorce . . over the matter of his "share" of all the sympathy money the public has been sending her. Washington Post

A police federation official in Britain complained about the paperwork, including a 7-page form for starting surveillance on someone, even if you're just watching him with binoculars. Daily Telegraph

The British academic publisher Routledge announced a new scholarly journal and blog, Celebrity Studies, for pieces like what impact do celebrity suicides have on society, and, y'know, why in the world would "Jessica Alba" get more search hits than "Chuck Shepherd"? Daily Telegraph

It has long been No Longer Weird, but still, having one expired relative in the back room that you don't get around to acknowledging is different from having three expired relatives in the back room (one since the 1970s). Chicago Tribune

There might be something to those Third World cultural beliefs that your name is your destiny because the murder victim, in a Richmond, Va., drug shooting, was Mr. Marijuana Thompson. WWBT-TV (Richmond)

Terrell Tribune Sad. Apparently they didn't even discuss Obama's victory at all.

bad for sheep Hasn't Bush's presidency been bad for the sheep of America? And the non-sheep of America.

prosthetic penii Wouldn't a rolled up sock do the trick and save the tax payers some money?

his "share" of all the sympathy money They should just put him general pop and these issues will vanish...like magic.

7-page form Good thing this doesn't apply to using binoculars to spy on your neighbors. I'd have to give up one of my favorite hobbies if it did.

expired relative in the back room No neighbors smelled anything? How is that possible? Decaying flesh stinks to high heaven...so I am told.

Marijuana Thompson I'd like to know how the parents meant for this name to be pronounced.

Terrell Tribune Local paper, local news. Seems like the presidential race was overbooked this time around anyhow.

Turkey Being an expat I've notice that something is out of whack when our president is too well liked by foreign nationals.

7-page form Ridiculous, someone should complain to Big Brother!

Celebrity Studies Alba vs Shepherd? Wow! That's a tough one! Guess I'll have to buy the book and/or get ma a genuine PhD to figure that one out.

3 relatives God forbid! She ripped the funeral homes off for thousands and thousands of dollars! That's got to be a felony!

His friends just called him M.J.. Puff? Jackie Paper? Late for lunch?

Congratulations, Mark Castillo, you're going to be the torchbearer at the next Asshole Olympics!

Don't feel too bad about the celebrity thing, Chuck, it's jsut that Jessica Alba has much nicer breasts than you. Not that yours aren't nice, too, though.

So the editor of the Terrell Tribune decided to publish local election results on the front page instead of the other election results. Okay.

First, if he did it because he has racist leanings, then someone should fire his butt because his was a biased decision. Otherwise there is no need to berate him because he did not follow the lead of every other media outlet that published news of the Presidential election results.

Second, the lady who was upset because she wanted a commemorative copy of the local newspaper running the Presidential election results on the front page really has to get out more often. Just about every other print media organization ON THE PLANET ran with the story. I am sure she can find a copy of the story in some other newspaper in her town for her scrapbook. Or, perhaps she can subscribe to a larger publication?

Just 2.5 cents worth of commenting from a Canadian who was very sick and very tired of our own election coverage, never mind the U.S. elections, ten seconds after it started.

(Thank the gods I have other activities to which I can direct my attention so that I did not have to be subjected to half the TV channels broadcasting U.S. election coverage and Canadian election coverage on the other half!).

agent j, at least our election coverage was only a month long. America really likes to make a show of it. Yes, yes, you're a 'democracy', we get it. Stop rubbing our noses in it, already.

It's not the U.S.s fault Canadian news shows stuff about U.S. elections... We need to show them for 2 years so that those of us who actually vote remember to go out and do it ^_^

patty, no skeletons in my closets, nope, none here, no way.

kingmonkey - This probably is the wrong blog for this but the US is NOT a democracy. It is a republic.

Cap'n Ahd - All I can say is that it is ok to show tit cleavage in public but if you show your shlong in public you become a WU headliner.

About the Terrel Tribune not printing Obama's victory. Alright it is stupid to complain if you just want one for a keepsake. Yes, there are thousands of other papers that you can buy for that. Not printing an article about the first black man to become president in a country where black men were owned at one point is mind boggling to me. With that said, who knows, maybe the Terral Tribune never posts national or international news. I don't know. Maybe their usual headline is who won the local pie baking contest.
