Miss Mayonnaise and Miss Salad Dressing

June 1952: Joan Corbett was named 'Miss Mayonnaise' while her twin sister, Jean, was given the title of 'Miss Salad Dressing'.

Los Angeles Times - June 11, 1952

Pasadena Independent Sun - June 8, 1952

Here's a better picture of the twins.

And here they are in a 1954 ad for Chesterfield Cigarettes.

The Burbank High School 'In Memoriam' blog has some biographical info about them:

Jean Corbett, 68, died April 29, 1999, in Kauai, Hawaii. Mrs. Corbett and her twin sister, Joan, were born in Burbank. Jean Corbett was a resident for 62 years. In the 1950's, the Corbett twins appeared in commercials, theater and films with such stars as Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra. They graduated from Burbank High School in 1949. They were dancers at Ken Murray's Blackouts. Jean was the cover girl for the 1955 opening of the Riveria Hotel, in Las Vegas. She is survived by her daughter, Lori Williams. Joan Corbett preceded her sister in death. A memorial service was held April 29 in Kauai. The Neptune Society, Kauai was in charge of the arrangements.

The Seattle Seafair Queen

It's too bad that the raucous early years, with roving pirates, did not last into our era.

Smile

This film looks almost like a forerunner of famous mockumentaries such as Spinal Tap. It certainly fits into our theme of "odd beauty contests."

Miss Department of Illinois

Edith Ann McDougall wasn't Miss Illinois. Instead, in 1950, she was named "Miss Department of Illinois," which sounds to me like a distinctly less prestigious title.

The "Miss Department" title indicated that the contest was run by the Illinois department of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. However, I haven't been able to find any "Miss Departments" from other states. So this must have been a uniquely Illinois thing.

Miss Air Force Recruiting Detachment 215

Celeste Yarnall may be best remembered for playing Yeoman Martha Landon in the 1967 Star Trek episode "The Apple".

She also starred in the 1971 cult hit The Velvet Vampire.

She was also quite successful outside of modeling and acting. According to wikipedia, she owned "one of L.A.'s top office real-estate firms".

Given all this, being awarded the oddly specific title of "Miss Air Force Recruiting Detachment 215 for 1964" has to rank as one of her lesser life achievements.

Miss Continuous Roller Towel

Or, simply, Miss Continuous Towel. I found both forms of the title used.

The title was conferred upon Trudy Germi of Chicago by the linen supply industry in 1949.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch - Dec 25, 1949

I'm always curious what becomes of these people who achieve 15 minutes of fame for weird reasons.

In Germi's case, after performing in a production of South Pacific, she married Lt. Carl Seiberlich in 1952. As far as I can tell, this ended her career as a model/actress.

Her husband eventually became Captain of the USS Hornet, which was the ship assigned to recover the Apollo 11 astronauts from the Pacific. I found a photo on a military website of the two of them together, attending a celebration for the recovery of the astronauts. I assume she's the one wearing sunglasses.

She died in 2018.
