Notice how this is really aimed towards the acquaintances / family of those addicted to alcohol. Unfortunately, as Gator Guy points out, many patent medicines were rarely effective and in some cases worse than the disease they were meant to cure.

Heck, heroin was sold as a cure for morphine addiction. At least this is genuinely substituting one high for another.
